Leveraging Kyushu University\u2019s extensive track record, facilities, and talent in the hydrogen sector, the \u201cHydrogen Institute for Sustainability (HYDROGENIUS)\u201d was established on April 1, 2026, as a research hub focused on hydrogen production, delivery, storage, utilization, and social implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

This institute consolidates the former International Research Center for Hydrogen Energy, the Next-Generation Fuel Cell Research Center, and the Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage. It aims to accelerate collaboration across disciplines\u2014from basic to applied research\u2014and to streamline strategy formulation and decision-making. Furthermore, through strong collaboration with the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I\u00b2CNER), the institute will strengthen continuity with cutting-edge research and development in the field of energy science. Kyushu University has long prioritized hydrogen energy research and has established a strong international presence and a solid research foundation centered on three hydrogen-related centers: the International Research Center for Hydrogen Energy, the Next-Generation Fuel Cell Research Center, and the Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage.
\nBy bringing together its research achievements and human resources, Kyushu University integrated the three existing centers to establish the \u201cHydrogen Institute for Sustainability (HYDROGENIUS)<\/span>\u201d in April 2026 as a hub for comprehensively advancing hydrogen production, delivery, storage, and utilization. The key strength of this institute lies in its ability to broadly and holistically advance research on the fundamental principles as well as applications of hydrogen\u2014from production to utilization\u2014through collaboration among its four research divisions: Hydrogen Production, Hydrogen Delivery and Storage, Hydrogen Utilization, and International and Interdisciplinary. Leveraging Kyushu University\u2019s research achievements and wealth of talent, as one of the few universities in the world with a dedicated hydrogen major, we aim to further advance hydrogen research and create value for society.
\nAs the importance of addressing the climate crisis and ensuring energy security grows, expectations for hydrogen are rising as a powerful option for realizing a sustainable society. Guided by our philosophy of being \u201ca university that drives social transformation through comprehensive knowledge,\u201d we will continue to strive for the realization of a sustainable and inclusive decarbonized society. We will further deepen our collaboration with industry, local governments, and research institutions both in Japan and abroad to promote research and development with a focus on social implementation, while also dedicating our efforts to nurturing the next generation of hydrogen energy professionals.

Based on Kyushu University\u2019s \u201cKnowledge Base \u2013 Technology Base \u2013 Technology Integration\/Systematization (SIF)\u201d concept, we will strengthen mechanisms to link research outcomes to the resolution of societal challenges. SIF (Social Impact Framework):
\nA research framework conceived by Kyushu University that focuses on achieving social implementation with unprecedented speed and accuracy. This is accomplished by clarifying the problem-solving process through backcasting from societal challenges, followed by integrated research efforts by three-tiered research teams -basic, applied, and practical-working as a unified whole. To accurately grasp international research and policy trends and advance the global expansion of our research activities, the Institute has appointed a Senior Advisor to provide guidance from an international perspective. We have established a system to receive advice on research strategy formulation, standardization, international collaboration, and social implementation. Dr. Sunita Satyapal, who has led research, development, demonstration, and deployment in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has been appointed as a Senior Advisor in a part-time role.
\nDrawing on her extensive experience spanning government, industry, and academia, she will contribute to the international expansion of the Institute\u2019s research activities while maintaining a broad overview of global research and policy trends. Furthermore, the Institute will continue to actively engage leading researchers from both Japan and abroad through international open calls and other initiatives.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

About Dr. Sunita Satyapal<\/h6>\n

An internationally renowned expert in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells with over 30 years of experience in government, industry, and academia, she is a researcher who has been a global leader in this field. In addition to her career as a researcher and visiting associate professor, she has held a variety of roles, including Chief Engineer and Director of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), as well as Manager of Research and Development (R&D), Business Development, and Stakeholder Engagement at United Technologies. She has a proven track record of leading R&D oversight and strategy formulation in industry and the U.S. government, coordinating billions of dollars in hydrogen-related R&D funding, and spearheading collaboration through international hydrogen partnerships with more than 25 countries. After earning her Ph.D. from Columbia University, she conducted postdoctoral research in applied physics and engineering physics at Cornell University. She has many notable achievements, including numerous publications in journals such as Scientific American, 10 patents, and the receipt of both the Meritorious and Distinguished Presidential Awards from the U.S. President.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
